The Ngunnawal people are among one of the many indigenous tribes within the ACT and surrounding regions, therefore it was long overdue that the Ngunnawal Language was spoken within our legislative assembly.
Last year my team and I co-sponsored this motion within the assembly to change the acknowledgement and have it spoken in an indigenous language.
This was the first-ever motion to be sponsored by all three parties: Liberal, Labour and the greens and the first parliament to speak in an indigenous language. I am very proud to have been a part of this progressive, long-overdue change.
Though, this is just the beginning. There are many other tribes within the ACT which need equal acknowledgement.
We must continue to acknowledge and support the first nations people. I and the Canberra Liberals are committed to working with the Indigenous community to build a better, more inclusive Canberra for all Indigenous Canberrans.
