Local Crime Concerns Continue

Over the past few months there has been a noticeable spike in the number of property thefts and also over the hot summer months, car fires. Add to this the fact Gungahlin Police Station is grossly understaffed, and you can understand why the community is concerned.

With recent data from the Productivity Commission showing that the ACT has the lowest police-to-resident ratio, this is worrying. I have contacted the Government to ask what is being done to ensure the safety of residents and their property, and will keep you updated with their response. My colleague Giulia Jones MLA, the Shadow Minister for Police & Emergency Services has been working incredibly hard to highlight these issues.

Recently, Giulia reported that Gungahlin Police station is just one of the many areas of our policing infrastructure that is not fit for purpose. There is little or no capacity for officers to conduct ‘soft interviewing’ for victims of domestic or sexual violence, there is no break-out or lunch room, and the toilets are within earshot of the rest of the team. The car park is at capacity and there is no crime investigations team based at the site because there simply isn’t the space.

The Canberra Liberals will keep the pressure up on the need to resource our front line emergency services and I hope to report back with some positive news for our community.
