Light Rail Motion
Continuing the fight for local businesses affected by Light Rail Stage 1 construction, I fought hard for a motion in the Legislative Assembly this month that called on the Government to implement the lessons learnt that were identified in their own report.
Despite all the evidence, the Government has made it clear that they will not provide any practical or financial support even though Light Rail is months late and still causing problems for locals. Labor and the Greens tried to argue that the marketing and communication efforts underway were sufficient – but we don’t think this is good enough given business is down by 30-50% and most traders have been putting up with this impact on their bottom line for more than 2 years.
Next steps in terms of actions in the Assembly – I will continue to keep the pressure on the Government to deliver a comprehensive six month review encompassing the entire light rail corridor. Hopefully this provides even more evidence to mount a case and do things differently in the future. Importantly, I will also continue to work with local businesses owners to do what I can to bring people back to the Gungahlin Town Centre and to restore its vibrancy.
